Merlin is a 48ft Cutter rigged ketch sailing yacht. The hull and deck areas are constructed from Ferro concrete, with the superstructure, cabin roofs and bulkheads manufactured from Burmese Teak and Ramon, with some marine ply and glass fibre coverings.
She was built between 1976 and 1980 at the Hillington Factory of Rolls Royce as a training project. Labour being provided on a voluntary basis by Rolls-Royce trainees, graduates, skilled personnel and managerial staff. Some external expertise was brought in for the more skilled and specialised work.

Enterprise Sailing Scotland Ltd have been managing and maintaining Merlin of Clyde and running the outings on behalf of Rolls Royce for the past 6 years and for three years prior were providing sailing support. Merlin of Clyde provides the ultimate in team building and training for all levels throughout the company and has covered many sea miles in the process. During the sailing season of 2001 Merlin completed a circumnavigation of the British Isles, with a few trips across the channel to France and the Channel Isles. In 2003 Merlin was in Norway for the month of June being used to improve relations between the Norwegians, Swedes and Danes within the company over there.
